The Rainscreen Wall System

The Rainscreen Wall System is an exceptional reflector of solar radiation. The heat accumulates on the surface layer and is not passed onto the underlying layers. The heat then escapes the wall thanks to the free-flowing air (The Fireplace Effect).

The ventilation air cavity will help prevent water from spreading inward to the underlying layers. Most of the water will run down the face side and most of what does get into the air gap will run down the back of the panel. The water will then evaporate and escape the wall thanks to the free flowing air. The ventilated wall and free-flowing air also helps to prevent rot and mold growth.

The ventilated wall also allows moisture from within the structure to pass through the wall and escape thanks to the free flowing air. This is possible because of pressure differences between the interior and exterior and the use of permeable layers.

Proper functioning of the Rainscreen Wall System must be studied in relation to the building's design and the climatic conditions in which the building is located. It is the responsibility of the architect/engineer to establish the correct materials for the specific project. In order for the Rainscreen Wall System to function properly, permeable layers must be used.
